What is Self-Empathy?

We hear a lot about self-compassion. But self-empathy is the true key to healing and growth.

The word "empathy" implies an "other". In our case, the "other" is our past self or inner child.

When we are hard on ourselves, or have a chronically critical inner voice, we are unable to experience empathy for our earlier self. We can't see the past clearly. We become resentful, overwhelmed, reactive, avoidant, angry, anxious and creatively blocked.

To truly accept and forgive ourselves, it's helpful to think of our earlier self as a separate being. A friend or loved one to whom we can extend understanding and compassion. This distance provides perspective, allowing us to be more objective as we view our failures and mistakes.

Self-empathy empowers us to directly access the root of who we truly are and begin to connect, communicate, and create from a place of ease, joy, and flow.
