4 Signs it’s Time to Leave

When we finally left the city and moved to a cabin in the woods, it was after a long deliberation period.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I learned a lot about how to know when it’s time to leave- whether a relationship, a job, or a city.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It comes down to 4 factors.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You don’t need to have all 4 in order to know it’s time. But the longer you wait, the longer you accept what’s no longer right, the more you try to ignore signs from the universe, the more of these factors will pile up in your life.

1) You’re restless.
Our final year in Toronto, I felt a low-grade, persistent frustration. I tried lots of different things to add some spice to my life, but it was an itch I couldn’t seem to scratch.

2) Leaving feels scary but exciting.
The idea of leaving the city freaked me out, but when I thought about waking up every day and looking at the forest, it also gave my heart a little thrill.

3) Strange catastrophes.
Key word: “Strange”. These catastrophes are too weird to be a “coincidence”, and they emphasize why you want to leave (with eerie accuracy). Bad news: The longer you wait, the bigger they become. Oprah says, “God throws a pebble, and then he throws a brick”. For us, this manifested as tension with our Toronto neighbours, and a sharp uptick in both crime and shady characters on our street.

4) You’re done growing there.
Despite the fact that Toronto is a massive city, with endless opportunities, the year before we moved I couldn’t help but feel it had nothing to offer me anymore. I knew that if I wanted to keep growing, I’d have to be somewhere else.

It’s the last month of 2020, folks. The perfect time to think about what’s next.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If making a move feels exciting, feels aligned, feels like freedom, don’t wait for god to throw a brick.

Hit the road today and watch the magic unfold.
